It’s all in the ‘app’: Lollapalooza 2012

How useful will the Lollapalooza 2012 phone app be for the average festival goer?

That was the first question that popped into my head when the app, not the event, came up first on Google search. Obviously the concert organiser thought it would be a good drawing card to put it in such an important position.

So I gave it a try knowing full well that I would not be attending this year’s event. I downloaded and installed it in less than a minute and it displayed the Friday line up on all stages.

Right away I knew when and where to see Laura Doherty, Ambassadors, Animal Kingdom, First Aid Kit, Wax and Remix Winner. And that was just on the landing page. At first look it seemed impressive to me. But why weren’t any of the festival headliners – Hot Chili Peppers, Black Sabbath, Jack White or The Black Keys – listed?

To find them I had to filter by artist and found they were scheduled for the Red Bull Sound Stage on 4 August, then after I filtered by stage and day. That’s how I found Gary Clark Jr, a ripping guitarist I’ve seen at the New Orleans Jazz Fest, playing 5 August at 3:15 on the PlayStation Stage.

Unfortunately the app didn’t feature Lollapalooza ‘Aftershows’. I heard the Dum Dum Girls are playing at night on 4 August at Cubby Bear, a legendary Chicago nightspot, where Dave Grohl of Foo Fighter fame claims he saw his very first rock and roll show. The Aftershow information must be added to next year’s app.

If you spill beer on your old style paper programme it won’t die like your expensive smart phone right? Will you use the app at Lollapalooza 2012 or download them for other large music festivals in the future? If yes let us know what you think.
